About MRQ
I have always liked to make things and learned to crochet and knit at a fairly young age. I took up counted cross-stitch shortly after college. My quilting experience began when friends started having babies and those counted cross-stitch designs became the center of baby quilts (very simple ones, believe me!). When I moved to Alaska (my then-husband was in the Coast Guard) in 1989, I came across a quilting class being offered locally. I decided it would be a good way to learn a few new tricks and maybe meet some people too. Little did I know that would be the beginning of an obsession. I’ve been quilting and learning a few new tricks ever since. I began teaching quilting classes and workshops in 1993 while I lived in Coos Bay, Oregon and made wonderful friends in the Coos Sand N Sea Quilters. I moved to Maine in 1995 and was finally able to buy my Gammill Longarm Quilting machine in 1997 and established The Quilter’s Corner. When I moved back to Vermont in 1999, my machine came with me and Mad River Quilting was born. I returned to graduate school in 2001 and earned my Master’s of Education from Saint Michael’s College. I now teach 8th grade math at the local middle school. I continued to indulge my passion for quilting by teaching evening and weekend classes through the school year and a quilters’ retreat in the summer, participating in several craft shows throughout the year, and, of course, continuously machine quilting. In the Spring of 2009, the possibility of expanding Mad River Quilting to a retail business came about. With continued conversations, business plans in place, lots of days of crossed fingers, and undying support from my friends and family, I was able to purchase the inventory of what was Cabin Fever Quilts and Mad River Quilting became "real" on January 1, 2010! To say that this is “a dream come true” sounds so cliché , but I don’t know how else to frame it. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue to share all the creativity and friendship that quilting brings to my life. My focus at the shop is to provide the hub of our local quilting community and a welcoming environment for visitors to the Mad River Valley. I look forward to your next visit!
